Before delving into formal lesson design, it might make sense to think about some of the ways that GLOBE can be used in small ways to enhance your existing curriculum. Here are some ideas:

Students dig a large hole in a rocky area for a field study, observed by a park ranger and a truck nearby.

When teaching about weather, have students take cloud observations or measurements of air temperature, pressure, or precipitation and compare them to GLOBE data from your area or other parts of the world.
For a unit on ecosystems, use GLOBE's land cover classification system to have students characterize and map their schoolyard or neighborhood.
When learning about the hydrosphere, have students measure pH, turbidity, temperature, or dissolved oxygen of a local water source and upload the data to GLOBE.
Organize a "measuring party" where students circulate through stations practicing protocols related to water quality or soil characterization.
Have students go outside and observe "green up"/bud burst and "green down"/leaf color changes at different points during the year.
Challenge students to come up with a simple research question that could be explored using GLOBE data and have them analyze available data to help answer their question.
Show students the GLOBE data visualization tools and have them check out data entered by students in other schools.
Using GLOBE data to teach graphing and data analysis skills, enabling students to practice creating graphs, looking for patterns, and interpreting the data.

You can also use a variety of approaches and lessons throughout the year to build up students' confidence and proficiency with using GLOBE resources over time. These experiences can also be followed by having your students complete projects for the SRS or the IVSS, as described in Module 11. (If projects are your ultimate goal, you can have the focus of your lessons be the content or skills you want to cover for the bigger project!)

Developing a new lesson requires some thought. It is useful to brainstorm some possible opportunities for using GLOBE in your context. Take a few minutes to think through the questions below and add your thoughts to your Journal (in the Navigation Bar) to draw on in your lesson planning. You can also add these thoughts directly into your Lesson Plan Template.

What GLOBE features (e.g., investigation areas, protocols, data) interest you the most to use in your context?
Look through the subjects and standards you already teach. Where do you see opportunities to integrate GLOBE?
What other skills, behaviors, or dispositions do you want students to practice, like planning, collaboration, precision, and time management?
